School Search Overview The flute is the smallest and highest pitched band instrument. It is technically a member of the woodwind family even though it’s made of metal and does not use a reed to create sound. In order to produce a sound on the flute, the player blows across the tone hole of the mouthpiece, allowing the air to split at the far edge of the hole. This creates a whistle sound. It uses the same principle as a whistle or blowing across a soda bottle. In all cases the air splits to create a sound. Aiming a thin air stream at the edge of the hole to make a sound can be a bit challenging at first but it gets much easier with time and practice. History of the Flute The flute is among the most ancient and widely used musical instruments having existed in ancient world cultures including Egypt, Sumeria, South America and Mexico.

Richard has an older brother named Chris. At Brockington, Armitage pursued his interest in music – playing the cello in school and local orchestras, and learning how to play the flute. By fourteen, having secured a grant from the Leicestershire Authority, he successfully persuaded his mother to allow him to transfer to Pattison College in Coventry , an independent boarding school specialising in the Performing Arts so that he could focus on drama and dance.

Early work[ edit ] After completing the programme at Pattison College in , Armitage joined the Nachtcircus in Budapest for six months to obtain his Equity Card , a requirement at the time for entertainment professionals to work in the UK. For me it was a bit too theatrical and all about standing on stage and showing off. I was looking for something else, so that’s why I went back to drama school.

The History of the Flute from Headjoint to Footjoint! Transverse flute and Recorders Flute history dates back to the Middle Ages early s when the flute was a cylindrical piece of wood that sounded in D major. This transverse flute, known as a fife, was used most often militaristically. During the Renaissance s , the flute continued to evolve and became more of a solo instrument than just military accompaniment.

These flutes were in different pitches based on the vocal models soprano, alto, tenor, bass. Each one had a two octave diatonic range beginning on either G or D and there were six holes spaced evenly across the instrument, so that fingers could easily reach them. While chromatic playing was possible on this flute, it was awkward due to cross fingerings with the open holes.

Grace had previously worked with Soyuzmultfilm on an animated version of the Welsh folktale cycle, the Mabinogion , and he turned to them again for the Shakespeare project, feeling “if we were going to animate Shakespeare in a thirty-minute format, then we had to go to a country that we knew creatively and artistically could actually deliver. And in my view, frankly, there was only one country that could do it in the style that we wanted, that came at it from a different angle, a country to whom Shakespeare is as important as it is to our own.

This style went with enormous flair and verve and comic panache; but a lot of it was kitsch. Actors were hired to recite abbreviated versions of the plays written by Leon Garfield , who had written a series of prose adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays for children in , Shakespeare Stories. According to Garfield, editing the plays down to thirty minutes whilst maintaining original Shakespearean dialogue was not easy; “lines that are selected have to carry the weight of narrative, and that’s not always easy.

It frequently meant using half a line, and then skipping perhaps twenty lines, and then finding something that would sustain the rhythm but at the same time carry on the story.

As a serious flutist myself with nearly fifty years’ experience, I have never found any flute playing like his in its total subservience of personality and technical facility to direct musical impulse. I would even go so far as to say that if his poor health hadn’t so drastically shortened his career he might easily have achieved renown as one of the finest flutists in the world.

I know that’s a bold claim to make, but every indication of his brilliance and promise can still be heard in recordings of the last recitals he gave during his late twenties and early thirties now available on CD. Petkoff from here on I’ll call him “CP” was also remarkable as a teacher in his ability to evoke that directness of musical impulse in his students.

CP often made suggestions in lessons about using vibrato expressively, but he never tried to describe how to produce it in the subtle way he did. Nor did he seem to want to meddle with his students’ vibratos if we already had fairly moderate ones. I think he also believed it wasn’t possible to communicate much about vibrato production verbally, maybe because he might have originally discovered his by chance, as other flutists often acquire a more automatic, steady-state vibrato—one day just suddenly “getting it” and considering themselves lucky if it’s not too fast and obtrusive the “nanny goat” type.

The year-old stepped out without her trousers. After spending a few weeks in Los Angeles, the singer made her big return in style. Or no style as it were. Known as a fertility god, prankster, healer and story teller, Kokopelli has been a source of wonder throughout the country for centuries. Kokopelli embodies the true American Southwest, and dates back over 3, years ago, when the first petroglyphs were carved. Although his true origins are unknown, this traveling, flute-playing Casanova is a sacred figure to many Southwestern Native Americans.

Carvings of this hunch-backed flute-playing figure have been found painted and carved into rock walls and boulders throughout the Southwest. There are many myths of the famous Kokopelli. One of which is that he traveled from village to village bringing the changing of winter to spring; melting the snow and bringing about rain for a successful harvest. It is also said that the hunch on his back depicted the sacks of seeds and songs he carried.

Legend also has it that the flute playing also symbolized the transition of winter to spring. It is also said that he was the source of human conception. Legend has it, everyone in the village would sing and dance throughout the night when they heard Kokopelli play his flute. The next morning, every maiden in the village would be with child. Whatever the true meaning of Kokopelli is, he has been a source of music making and dancing, and spreading joy to those around him.

Even today, Kokopelli, with his hunchback and flute, is always welcome in our homes.
