The bridge, designed by Sir Thomas Bouch , officially opened in May The entire train fell into the firth, with the loss of 75 passengers and train crew. The critical response to his article was enhanced as he had previously written two poems celebrating the strength and certain immortality of the Tay Bridge. A second much more well received poem was published in the same year by the German writer Theodor Fontane. Cronin ‘s first novel, Hatter’s Castle , includes a scene involving the Tay Bridge Disaster , and the filmed version of the book recreates the bridge’s catastrophic collapse. The rail bridge was rebuilt, and in the s the Tay Road Bridge was built. During the winters of —10 and —11, the Tay froze over as far as the Tay Road Bridge, and ice floes remained for weeks despite a thaw. In years when Ascension Day concurs with Victory Day, we mark only the former, thus ignoring the latter. Metal workers have the holiday of St. Eloi, July 24 Festival of St. Eloi – French Basque. When a holiday happens to fall on a Tuesday or Thursday, many French workers may take the Monday or, respectively, Friday, off as well. This is not official and does not apply to institutions such as banks or government, but is sufficiently commonplace to cause difficulties doing business on occasion.

A later measure taken by the post-WW2 liberation government in established it as a legally required paid holiday for all French employees. The French government permits individuals and workers’ organizations to sell them tax-free. Historical Origins The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times, with the festival of Flora , the Roman goddess of flowers, and the Walpurgis Night celebrations of the Germanic countries; it is also associated with the Gaelic Beltane.

John and I met on June 28th , sometime around midnight I guess you could say there were fireworks from the beginning! We met while making our way up to the main stage; literally just bumped into one another! I guess it was destined that our paths in life met at that very spot. I truly feel that if we both had taken a few steps in another direction, our paths would have never crossed in life! We spent the whole weekend at the Gorge getting to know each other, as well as our separate groups of friends.

I felt like I had known him my entire life after that weekend. He asked for my number. I was living in Santa Monica at the time, John was living on his sailboat in Port Orchard and gone most of the time out on patrol. Not the most ideal set up from the beginning, and perfect recipe for it never working out. I guess we couldn’t resist the fireworks, and along the way still found a way to see each other.

After realizing I didn’t want to live anywhere else than the beautiful Pacific Northwest, I moved home. Shortly after John and I officially started dating.

In Their Own Words Another in a series of personal accounts by POWs of their last moments of freedom and the personal challenges of capture and captivity. These are stories drawn from biographies POWs either penned themselves or shared orally with family and friends who transcribed them for posterity. The voice and mood of these recollections understandably span a broad range of emotions. But each gives poignent testimony to the courage, resolve and indominable hope of the men and women who, in war, fell captive to enemy forces and were forced — in the face of deplorable deprivations — to fight for their country in totally new and unexpected ways.

This has a significant impact on industrial users as well as on residential users. Developed countries have traditionally invested in supply-side solutions such as construction and upgrading of water supply structures and treatment plants to meet water demand, and developing new water catchment areas and facilities. In the last few decades, it has become apparent that these measures alone will not be sufficient to maintain a sustainable supply. As a result, water utilities and governments have begun investigating and investing in alternative approaches to water supply Chanan et al.

This has given rise to the demand-side approach, based on the principles of least cost planning and demand management that include options such as efficient use of water through reducing losses, improving the efficiency of water consumption using advanced equipment and processes and source substitution. For example, using rainwater tanks can reduce water demand from mains supply significantly and applying the principle of the water quality cascade, treating water according to the end use, and reuse of wastewater has further demand-reduction potential.

The benefits of adopting a demand-side approach rather than a supply-side one are in the reduced and avoided infrastructure costs for water-supply facilities through the deferred or reduced overall needs for construction or upgrade of dams, water treatment plants and pipes.
